Other Opportunities

Last Letter is passionate about people who are sacrificially taking action to do justice and share Jesus around the world.  Though Last Letter cannot take responsibility for these projects or endorse their representative organizations, we are glad to bring attention to those who are seeking to make a difference in the lives of the lost, the downtrodden and the oppressed.

WorldCrafts

WorldCrafts makes a difference . . . for victims of modern-day slavery. Each year, by force, fraud, or coercion, millions of people find themselves trapped in bonded labor and sexual exploitation. WorldCrafts artisan groups are working to end these evils by providing a sustainable income to people in poverty. When earning a living wage, parents are less likely to be seduced by a sex trafficker’s poison promises regarding their daughter’s future. And young women hoping for a better life are less likely to fall prey to criminals seeking to use and abuse the most vulnerable.

“Old Jo Has Died” - A Young Thai Woman Finds New Life at The Well

Thailand

WorldCrafts artisan groups work to end sexual exploitation and human trafficking among the world’s poor.  The Well provides training for women in traditional Thai arts. The talent and tranquillity of the Well artisans belies their astoundingly difficult backgrounds: one was sold into prostitution by her family as a small child; several were teenage bar workers; and another was a single mom with no resources. They have discovered their own innate talent through careful training in Thai arts, and the Well has given them a sense of hope and a positive vision for their futures. Today, these women have dreams of opening their own businesses; becoming doctors, nurses, lawyers, and teachers; and sending their children to school.

Lily’s Second Chance

Northeast India

WorldCrafts artisan groups work to end sexual exploitation and human trafficking among the world’s poor.  The Priscilla Center reaches the down-and-out in Northeast India.  Due to the social unrest in parts of India, many traditional weavers were forced to abandon their homeland and work as hired maidservants in the city. There, employers sexually, physically, and verbally abused them. But the Priscilla Center now offers these Indian women a different option. By partnering with the center, the women learn to handloom weave, allowing them to earn a fair wage while staying within their village. With each strand of fiber, they’re securing a way to pay for their children’s education and medical expenses.

China Bears & Books

Sichuan Province, China

2009-2010

On May 12, 2008, an earthquake shook Sichuan province in China and changed the lives of those living there forever. The number of people listed as dead or missing stands at more than 87,000, according to China’s official Xinhua news agency, but millions of people are displaced and still struggling to cope with the emotional dimensions of the disaster.
Doors have opened for Southern Baptists to help train thousands of Sichuan teachers in techniques of trauma counseling that will help the survivors. Counseling will help children who have been traumatized to verbalize their feelings.
Each child who is counseled will receive their own teddy bear to hug and love. Teddy bear hand puppets will be used by teachers to draw out the children in make-believe conversations.
